louder please

speak up, i can't hear you

nanowrimo 2008: days 18 – 21

I’m all caught up!

I averaged about 2500 words a night for the last 4 nights and smashed through to 35,000+ words. Only 15k to go, and that’ll be a walk in the park. I wasn’t sure if i was going to get caught up before the clock stuck tomorrow, but i skipped a minor bit ahead because the characters started talking. when i looked up, i’d crossed the line.

i spent some time today reworking and fleshing out the rest of the book so that i’d have a good idea where and how i could skip over to get to “the end” without running the risk of throwing myself a curveball in rewrites. Basically i’ve got a couple of side-threads that help support the main story and allow for plot twists to not come out of the blue. those can be safely put aside for now. it’s stronger now than it was before. i realized last night (with ryan’s soundboard help) that i thought i had planned to write a nice slow-paced quazi-chiclit novel that happened to have a few unnatural elements in it to spice it up. it turns out romance wasn’t the “point” of the novel, and really did the main characters a disservice by continuing to struggle with it. now that i’ve let go (and gotten out of the 20’s) everyone is much happier. and, oddly enough, romantic.

so enjoy your clip for the evening (wherein the author projects a bit of her own frustration with vampire novel writers and fans –i’m talking to you, isabella swan!)

“I am waiting for you to ask about the possibility you will be turned into a vampire.”

“Oh.” She wrinkled her nose. “Why would I ask that?”

“Immortality is a very seductive idea to the mortal, I’m told.”

“Not any with any sense.” The suddenness of his laugh startled her and her defensiveness egged her on even before he prompted her for an explanation. “Don’t get me wrong, there are clearly a few perks you’re enjoying, but the cost seems to steep for me. I don’t have a death wish or anything, but I think if I had to live forever, I’d go insane.”

“It happens,” he admitted.
