nanowrimo 2008: day 1

tomorrow includes a birthday lunch, dropping charlotte off for an over-night with my aunt and uncle, and an evening at the casino. knowing that, i tried to get a drop on the word goal (900ish) by starting at midnight before going to bed. it’s now 1:45am and i’ve stopped after 1700ish words and a complete (if not robust) first chapter. want to see how it ends? i knew you would ;)

“Hugo? Was there an older woman living in 613 recently?”

“No ma’am, Miss Wilson. The young couple that bought that one moved out two years ago. They just now sold it two the young gentlemen I expect you met on the elevator coming down here. Ain’t nobody living in that place for years.”

“Thanks, Hugo.” Natalie said as they walked out the door. “Have a good night.”

“You too, Miss Wilson. Look after yourself, you hear?”

“That’s strange,” Helen said as they started down the street. “I’m sure I’ve seen an old woman sitting by that window before.”

“Mayhaps you have,” Hugo said softly when they were out of earshot. “I said there weren’t nobody living in that place. Didn’t say nothing ‘bout anything else might be in there.”
