tomorrow (technically less than 7 hours from now) marks the beginning of national novel writing month. if you’re not familiar, it’s a communal attempt to write a 50,000 word novel over the course of 30 days. pencils up at 12:00am on 11/1 and down at 11:59:59pm on 11/30. it may or may not sound like a big deal to you depending on how much you write, just like cycling 20 miles isn’t impressive when you regularly go 50+, and walking 3 blocks is like getting your mail at the end of the driveway when you walk 8 to work and back every day.

it is a moderately big deal to me. i have had very prolific days where i’ve knocked out 4-5k at once. i’ve had dry spells where i can’t put together more than 100 in a week. i’ve attempted nanowrimo 3 times. the closest i came was last year at 12k. defeatism sets in fairly quickly for me and my “1866/day” chart that tells me how much i have to write to catch up.

this year, i’m really going to try. 2-3 hours/night + more on the weekends. it may mean the laundry doesn’t get done, it may mean i won’t post as often, but let’s be honest. i can only write after i’ve finished procrastinating everything else, including laundry, other writing, mindless video games, television, email, and …pretty much everything else i can think of.

so, you may not here from me until 12/1. you may hear from me every day while i write about writing instead of write. only time will tell.
