louder please

speak up, i can't hear you

something you should know

there is a fairly common plot device in the sci-fi series which involves a character waking up in some mental institution and discovering that everything they know about life was all a bad dream. i do not have a problem with this device when it is interestingly executed. it does, however, bother me the more i see it because most of these people have watched the same shows i have. they should know better.

so, as a public service to you all i present “how to behave if you suddenly wake up in a mental institution and someone tells you that the last X years of your life were a coma-induced falsehood.

  • never ever never take the drugs.
  • never listen to the doctor’s advice of how to reduce your hallucinations/recover your “real” memory.
  • if you see strange visions of shadow people lurking in the shadows or trying to break through the walls, go to them. help them. they are your real world trying to break through.
  • if you are repeatedly presented with parental/authority figures, do not listen to them. do the opposite of what they say. they are the bad people/dream/whatever trying to coerce you. this is ESPECIALLY TRUE if they died in or are acting fundamentally different than they would in the real timeline.
  • if you are fortunate enough to trip back into the real timeline, do not try to destroy the people you love in it, per the doctor’s suggestions. you will feel really bad later when you’re back where you belong.

it may take you a while to get back. don’t worry. the part they tell you about dreams not having the same timeline as reality is actually true.
